The title of PAM Public Lectures is Hot and Wet by Erik L’Heureux. Erik L’Heureux is an American architect and educator. He migrated to Singapore from New York and exploring the culture, environment, climate and architecture in Singapore and Malaysia which is hot, wet conditions of the region.
During the lecture, Erik L’Heureux showing us some of his famous project and explain to us about the idea, design consideration and design process.

Simple Factory Building Pencil Office in Singapore, The special facade with complex trellis screen enhance the iconic of the building and filters airborne pollutants from the neighbourhood.

This image showing that the natural air flow through the building using the principle of physic which is stack effect. Most tropical region building will use stack effect to reduce the energy and create natural air ventilation.
Stack effect means that warmer air which is less pressure and will rise and escape through the special design roof, it will be replaced by cooler air from low opening in the building. Stack effect is the movement of air into and out of building which resulting from air buoyancy. Buoyancy occurs due to a difference in indoor to outdoor air density resulting from temperature and moisture differences. The greater the thermal difference and the height of the structure, the greater the buoyancy force, and thus the stack effect.

The design idea is to cool down the temperature of interior space and reduce the heat transfer from exterior to interior space due to tropical climate in Singapore. Erik L’Heureux created amazing light and shadow to the interior spaces by using natural day lighting.
Pencil believes that simplicity is filled with tremendous intelligence. After the lecture, I learnt about the importance of the design consideration. Design consideration include everything such as culture, climate, circulation and topography are totally affect to design. Project of Pencil Office showing that the creative idea and design to solve the problem hot and wet in Southeast Asia with tropical climate. All of his project are fully recyclable and can be called as green building. Erik L’Heureux : “I don’t believe every project starts afresh, rather, I am interested in cultivating specific approaches to design, especially surrounding ideas of veils, multiple envelopes, and atmosphere.”
After the lecture, we as a group have asked architect Erik L’Heureux a question. The question is about who or what inspires him. Architect Erik L’Heureux : "Elizabeth Diller of Diller Scofidio was inspired me, once. In 15 years, we grew from a small loft off with a handful of people trying to do challenging work, until now doing significant and public projects. Besides finding my own voice and direction, I'm not only looking to people, but also specific projects for inspiration. I will look at the detailing of Louis Kahn or the formal virtuosity other architects."
I am so grateful and exciting for attend this public lecture which organize by PAM and learnt a lots of knowledge in architecture. Those project done by Erik L’Heureux using different material interact with awesome design to solve tropical climate problem are useful for us as a student study in Malaysia.
