‘SLIDING HOUSE’, SUFFOLK, UK

The Sliding House, in Suffolk, England, features a sliding structure that fits over the static main house, guest annexe and greenhouse. The brief from client was a self-build house to retire to in order to grow food, entertain and enjoy the landscape. Each element of the composition is carefully proportioned in relation to frame, window and wall sizes. All elements were prefabricated to be assembled on site, except groundworks, internal joinery fixtures and external surfaces, which were in situ. As it moves, the sliding element creates shifting outdoor living areas between the static elements as well as altering views, lighting conditions and the sense of enclosure inside the house.

Sliding House offers variable of spaces, extent of shelter, sunlight and insulation. It is ability to connect the overall building composition and character according to season, weather, or a remote-controlled desire to delight.

These separated forms can be

transformed by the fourth and largest element in the group, the 50 ton mobile roof and wall enclosure which traverses the site. The mobile roof and walls form an insulating structure that passes over the annexe, house and glasshouse, creating combinations of enclosure, open-air living and framing of views according to position.

The progression from road past annexe and garage, to house, glasshouse and then on to garden are a logical sequence. The bedroom of the house is modular timber cassette construction, the living room is using normal curtain wall glazing system. The annexe and garage are constructed from the modular timber cassette.

The Sliding House is the most emotional impact architecture building in my memories, because my case study of architecture building in design studio 2 also studying this house. The idea of interior space is to interact with natural environment, people inside the building can feel the feeling between climate and season changing.

There are four season in UK, which is Spring,

Summer, Autumn and Winter. During Spring season, the feeling in interior spaces of sliding house will interact with rain, blossoming trees and flowering plants. People will be sitting in the green house enjoying family hour at night and exploring starry sky. Spring also can be describe as delight the emotion of a person, a happy season. Summer is the UK's warmest season, people will feel the hot from nature as the earth are angry.

Autumn can be mild and dry or wet and windy. It's the season when the leaves fall from the trees and people can feel the feeling of sad while enjoying the scenery of the leaves falling down. Winter is the UK's coldest season, with freezing temperatures, people will feel the power of nature in this season.

The Sliding House can be describe in a word “Transform”. This house can transform its façade appearance according to nature, climate and season. The most importance things is comfortable of human. Inside the house, the transformation will due to human comfortable and emotion relate to nature.
