Every student is required to explore 1 distinctive change between old architecturedesign and what we have in the present.
Architecture is changing everyday, from the past until now and to the future. The change of architecture involve about material, style of architect, culture, environment, civilization of human and technology. Old architecture have been made of wood, stone and bricks. One of the example is pyramid in Egypt.

Modern architecture have been made of steel, glass and iron, by using advanced technology, architecture nowadays can be created in geometric shape and fantastic facade. Example of Heydar Aliyev Center by Zaha Hadid.

The era of modern architecture came in when people discovered new materials and technology.
The distinctive change from Old Architecture to New Architecture is the materials used in the buildings. New architecture is usually made of simple, and flat designs but Old architecture is another story when talking about the complication. Classical buildings usually have amazing craftmanship and the beauty of detailed at building ornaments.

The example of classical building that have amazing craftmanship to represent Baroque style in that era. Saint Nicholas Church is the first church that was built in Baroque style. This Old Architecture showing that ornaments are represent honorable and nobility.
But today, ornaments are deemed useless and waste of material. Ornaments and craftmenship nowadays only represent the beauty of art interact with architecture but no function at all.
New architecture practice with Less is More and Form follow function which totally agree with ornaments is wasting materials. Fallingwater House by Frank Lloyd Wright defined the relationship between man, architecture, and nature. "From its daring cantilevers to its corner window detail and constant sound of the waterfall, Fallingwater is the physical and spiritual occurence of man and architecture in harmony with nature. All you have to do is listen." showing the soul of this building is connect to nature and the Form is follow the Function.

In spite of old architecture or new architecture, all buildings must stand for use and function. Compare to two totally visually different buildings and different materials but they could stand for the same reason, or hold the same meaning or feeling.
For example, the Birmingham Museum and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao both are museums, but one is classic and one is modern. The function of this two building are same as a museum but the soul of building is different because using different of material and different style of architecture design.

Birmingham Museum

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
All buildings have their own soul, which represent their stories behind. As a architecture student, both Old Architecture and New Architecture have their own learning point. We should learn from the past and solve the problem at present. Architecture are all about solving problem, during lecturer of DESIGN OF THE OLD & NEW in class, i learnt about the OLD IS THE NEW GREEN. Old is the new green is a style of repair and replacement in architecture, which transform a old and no function building become a new funtional building by changing its materials. Old is the new green also a win-win solution, which will save the energy, eco save and keep the memories of historic building stand nowadays.
