What do you wish you can learn in Architecture school?

In the early days of the architectural profession, teaching and practice were neatly aligned: the elements of the various styles could be taught and put into practice in the field. However in the 20th century, while the business of construction was becoming increasingly technocratic, architectural theory became equally pluralistic and esoteric. Ever since, the dichotomy between architectural education and practice has been a controversial subject. Many in the business say that education fails to prepare students for the real world, while some academics equally contend that architecture schools have given up too much ground to technical considerations, and no longer teach enough important theory.

True Learning Continues until It Is Put Into Action

Whatever people says, I think we need more focus on practice in real life. We think, we design, we do. But what we do is just a model making by using modeling card, balsawood or etc, and mostly connect it by using super glue. It is just an empty talk without really built something in REAL. Involvement in practice is one of the way that provides chance to us to be more comprehend in architecture. That is why it makes me excited during the period of completing the installation in the gallery. It makes me learnt a lot about the jointing skills, equipment using skills and etc. Beside, everything we learnt is from papers. I wish I can learn more knowledge by having a journey. I think I am narrow-minded. Ideas and views is not deep enough as well as not comprehensive enough. Thus, we need to broaden our horizons to apply to our design concept in order to solve the problem that we have to.

Technical Skills

Schools always expect student to master by themselves in their free time. Nowadays, the architecture students design the building by using computer skill such as SketchUp, Photoshop, Autocad, 3ds Max and so on. However, school requires students to present their design in a way that require the assistance of this basic skills but failed to guide students to use them. School expect students to present their design by using those technical skills to show in professional way by refer others example from the internet or books. Although school has provided some courses for us to learn those basically technical skills but it is just far from enough. There is no Photoshop, Sketchup, Lumion and etc that some of it is frequently need to use in real life or in work. We need to take the time to explore and learn by ourselves. I wish that I could learn more and more software that will influence us in our real life.

Thinking Parallel

Understanding of sociology and human psychology that would help architect design spaces to satisfy for human needs. We have to create and design by using a common that everyone will know without a sign. For instance, placing two signboard with using blue and red in front of the washrooms without any patterns and words. So what do you think which one is for male and which is for female? Hence, greater in sociology and human psychology, greater in problem solving to design spaces to satisfy for human needs.
