Lecture 10: The Innovative

What have I learn in this semester (Theory of Architecture), that has change my perspective toward the architecture field.

In this subject (Theory of Architecture) I had learnt a lot of architecture knowledge and how architecture affect the world. So after I finished all the lesson, I found that the most important lesson for me was the Architecture Style (Old Architecture and New Architecture), it was because this showed the transformation of architecture and how architects express their architecture knowledge to the world. This lesson totally change my perspective of expressionism architecture. Nowadays, architects also designing the building by following the trend. What is architecture trend? Architecture trend is like a styles every architects are designing building in the same way at the period.

So, the styles are categories into three which is Modernism Architecture, Post-Modernism Architecture and Contemporary Architecture. Modernism Architecture was a transformation of historical architecture styles such as Victorian Style and so on. Modernism architecture come out with a theory of architecture which is “Less is More”. In this period, architects think that, building should be less ornamentation and more focus on the function of the spaces. Architecture should designing in a straight line, clean cut form and the most important is how to use a column or opening to define a space. So, most of the architect are also designing in the same way by using the same way. The signature architect in this era was Le Corbusier.

After the era of Modernism, it comes to Post-Modernism Architecture which is an improvement and also a conflict of Modernism Architecture. In this era, architects think that design is a very freedom thing, it should not limit by the form or straight line. So, they come out a new theory of architecture which is “Less is Bored’, which means it is a conflict of modernism architecture. They begin to design the building in dynamic forms and even playful and whimsical silhouettes instead of straight line and regular geometric shapes. So, of cause architects tend to design the building to follow the trend. The signature architect in this era was Frank Ghery.

Nowadays, Post-Modernism Architecture was a past, architects begin to stop and think about the people, the community. Architects begin to focus on how to serve the people more than to designing a fancy façade building. They designing the building with the sustainable component, and recycled or nontoxic materials, so this is called passive design. Passive design can apply to any architecture style, which means architect can design whatever they want. So, in this era, many architects tend to create their own architecture style. For example, a very famous architect Tadao Ando, he is a brutalism architect. He design the building with big scale of concrete wall, less ornamentation and focus on how to apply the natural light into the design. Most of the time, people don’t really like the brutalism style, because it is just a plane concrete wall with bigger scale, some people said that it is nothing special, but for other people they think that brutalism are more focus on the spaces to let people feel something and experience something more than just a visual style of architecture.

In a nutshell, the main thing of change my perspective of architecture is do not followed what others people do. Create our own style is more important because it is classify who are you. However, Tadao Ando is the one who inspired and change my perspective of architecture.
